Specifically designed to minimize total power dissipation the VNI4140K
is a new quad high-side intelligent power switch (IPS) able to drive
any type of load with one side connected to ground. Produced using
the latest generation of ST’s VIPower® technology
to achieve a 50% saving in RDS(on) compared to earlier
devices with the same die size.

In addition, the dramatic reduction in on-resistance
and quiescent current makes energy savings through lower losses,
with device power consumption lower than any competitive product,
and achieved at lower cost. Power consumption is cut by 40% compared
to earlier generation VIPower devices.

Thanks to this advanced technology, four 80 mΩ RDS(on)
(at 25 °C) low-voltage Power MOSFETs are integrated on-chip
with protection and diagnostic features. Each channel is fully protected
against overload and short circuit (current limitation and junction
over-temperature blocks); the junction over-temperature protection
is thermally independent per each channel. Added in protection like:
undervoltage shut-down, ground disconnection, case over-temperature,
make the VNI4140K an indestructible device for any low voltage application
(up to 41 V absolute maximum rating). An integrated clamping network
allows a fast demagnetization of large inductive loads (1.15 H typical
value). Diagnostic outputs are open ground, to enable wired-OR configuration
with other devices, and the logic inputs are 3.3 V CMOS/TTL compatible.
The switch conforms fully to the IEC 61131-2 standard for programmable
logic devices.

Compact PowerSSO24
package |

Optimizing the trade-off between RDS(on) and die size
allows the VNI4140K to be produced in a compact PowerSSO24 package,
saving space in the application compared to competitive four-channel
devices.

IPS devices integrate a logic interface, drivers and protection
circuits on the same chip as a power stage, to simplify system design
and save space in industrial applications such as PLCs (programmable
logic controllers), CNC (computer numerical control) machines, robotics
and building automation systems. However, it can easily be employed
in applications where low-voltage smart-power solid-state relays
are needed.
