Abstract
In the era of convergence of consumer and pc technologies, the computationally
heavy multimedia applications have to be redesigned for hardware
and architectures which are highly scalable, low in power consumption,
and able to work in parallel configurations in order to achieve
high performance throughput in minimum areas.
This paper takes the case of a popular audio multimedia decoder
– Dolby AC3 decoder - which has been redesigned to exploit
the multi-core architectures. We describe and compare the merits
and demerits of two unique parallel computing approaches for implementing
Dolby AC3 audio decoder. The two methods are Channel-wise and Frame-wise
decoding.
Both the methods are modeled and simulated for the multi-core processors
in shared memory configuration using POSIX threads [12], and these
methods can easily be extended to distributed memory systems. |
