Dear Reader,

The leading role of STMicroelectronics in the discretes market was confirmed throughout 1999 - all product families, Thyristors, Protection and Rectifier devices showing steady global growth.

The Company's proprietary ASD™ technology has given plenty of scope for new and innovative devices, in particular for the industrial and telecom markets, and new prospectives in the computer and consumer segments.

For the SCRs and Triacs, 1999 saw the launch of the ACS family, spearheading a new era in the design of AC power switching, thus providing substantial technical and economical benefits for designers.

Thanks to progress in ASD technology, Protection products now include Integrated Passives and Discretes (IPD) devices, where silicon active discrete structures are integrated with passive functions. Filtering products for mobile phones, set-top boxes, computers and peripherals are now emerging, based on this new capability.

With sustained R&D investment, ST's Rectifier family has been complemented by new ranges of products such as the 300V power rectifiers, the Max247 family and signal Schottky diodes in SOD and SOT micro packages.

At the start of the third millennium, R&D efforts will be emphasized and strategic partnerships with our global customer base will continue. To strengthen ST's leadership in the discretes market, the Company will continue to provide a global customer base with the leading edge technology necessary for their strategic advantage.
